Twenty-three Distinguished Fellows attended the Ohio Art Education Association's Annual Professional Development Conference in Dayton, November 10-12, 2022.

We were especially pleased to have two of our Charter members in attendance - George Liston and Lynda Berman.

At the Fellows' business meeting Laura Tawil was elected as the new Fellows Chair -her term will begin January 1.

We extend our appreciation to outgoing Chair Suzanne Mitolo for her service and care of the Distinguished Fellows.

At the 2022 Dayton Conference two new Fellows were inducted – Judy Flamik and Matt Young.  Judy has been an active OAEA member for many years and was instrumental during the height of National Board Certification for art educators.  Matt Young is our outgoing OAEA President and has been an enthusiastic leader and arts advocate. Matt will take over the reins as Conference Chair next year. These two are a great addition to our Distinguished Fellows team.

Pictured below are Judy Flamik with Lynda Berman, and Matt Young with Kurt Reichert.

A VISIT TO THE TROLLS AT AULLWOOD

by Nancy Vogel
OAEA Dayton Conference Offsite co-chair
OAEA Distinguished Fellow

This year it  was  a pleasure to continue to work on the conference committee co-chairing offsite as a Fellow. We had an amazing committee in Dayton and I was excited to share my personal experience volunteering on the construction of the Trolls at Aullwood Audubon in Englewood with conference members on Saturday for an Encore option.

The weather changed from 70 degrees and warm to snow, but a group of us persisted on our hike. We had a dozen people signed up for the experience. Some decided to visit the trolls on their own and a group of six of us stayed together. I enjoyed sharing the construction process and Thomas Danbo’s vision (artist of the installation) as we hiked through freshly falling snow.

Due to the snow and visibility, each troll seemed to “appear” in front of us.  We came upon them as if they were a surprise. What a great way to close out a productive conference weekend!

As reported by Lynda Berman:

Michele Hamsher came to Athens last Monday and she gave Jeff Chaddock this lovely set of watercolors as a thank you for letting us do plein air in his gardens.

It is rare to catch Jeff at home but we did and he was delighted with the gift.

Hope you enjoy seeing the works as much as Jeff did receiving them:

Charleston, SC ... Visiting Sherrie Dennis

Sue Ayers, Suzanne Mitolo, and Alice Tavani visited Sherrie Dennis in Charleston, SC for spring break.

We had a chance to see some of our favorite spots like the downtown Charleston market and the Angel Oak Tree.  This tree is thought to be 400-500 years old and said to be one of the oldest living things in the country.

We also had some new adventures visiting the Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens where we saw nesting bald eagles and the Charleston Tea Garden. We sure learned a lot about agriculture this trip and loved seeing our dear friend!

Barrie Invited and I Went!                               By Lynda Berman

What a great time we had in and around Ft Myers, Florida!
We sat eating lunch on the pier under this beauty’s watchful eye!
Barrie took me to the beach to pick up shells and I went twice with her daughter Alexis who walks the beach at 6:30am most mornings. We also connected with Pam Signorelli who taught Zentangle at our OAEA Summer Symposium 2021. Pam very recently bought a home nearby. I tangled around my shells.
Barrie’s daughter Tristum is in real estate and we went to Sunday afternoon open houses. Here’s Barrie looking regal in the courtyard of a 12 million dollar home.
Pam, Barrie and I spent 7 hours at the Naples Botanical Gardens. We were delighted by the early morning sighting of unexpected numbers of cranes, herons, anhingas, cormorants and much less common wood storks.. We were fascinated by the tropical splendor of orchids, plants and trees originating in Florida, Central America, the Far East. It was a glorious day!
And did I mention the Baker Museum of Art and the Dali Museum? And the board walk through Corkscrew Sanctuary, the largest existing old growth forest (swamp) of bald cypress?  And watching the sunset from the beach with champagne and Cheetos.
It was a restorative, educational, and totally fun time with Barrie and her family!

Wrapping up 2021 and Gearing up for 2022 ... Carrie Barnett

12/5/2021

It's December 1st and I'm reflecting on this past year and all of the personal growth and recovery I've been through and how my art and connections with my art family have remained a constant throughout this crazy time.

Personal Art Reflection: My new studio space was finally finished in early June and Bella (my mini-aussiedoodle) and I have moved in and are both enjoying our time relaxing and creating. (She mostly just relaxes and supervises the artmaking.) I'm wrapping up a series of works that I started in January of 2021. These pastels range in size from 5"x7" to 11"x14" and are a journey through the emotions of the year. Colors and mark-making were inspired by feelings and at times, memories of places I've visited. I'm getting very excited as I gear up for my first personal exhibition in January! Now that the work is (mostly) created, it's time to matt and frame it for the exhibition. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity.

Art Family Reflection: I just participated in my first NAEA Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Liaison meeting and it was so inspiring to be talking with other art educators from around the country who share a passion for making art education "better". I am honored to be one of Ohio's two liaisons for this position and am definitely gearing up for the work required of this position. It will be exciting to see where these ED&I trainings leads our organization. Who knows... maybe I'll be able to create some ED&I training sessions to share with everyone!

In closing... take time to reflect this month as you prepare for the new year. Who knows what 2022 will bring!
Artfully,
Carrie

It has been a very busy year at my house!  I am blessed to spend much time with my beautiful treasured grandchildren during this semi retirement stage of my life. They are exhausting, but it’s never a dull moment for MiMI and Poppy.

Picture
I learned to never say never when we added a new puppy to our family after I said I wasn’t going to be tied down again.  Mia Bella, an Australian Shepherd, has brought energy and love to our home and is a true beauty. She loves the grandkids and is very playful!!

I am keeping very busy during my semi-retirement and enjoy continuing my art experiences but in teaching and creating!  I continue to be an adjunct for OSU at Newark campus teaching the History of Art and Music and Curriculum Concepts in Art for Elementary teachers.  The college students keep me inspired and always learning something new!  It’s my brain gym and my passion.
I also am honored to again be an Artist in Residence for the Ohio Arts Council's TeachArtsOhio grant program. This year I'm teaching for 36 days at two middle schools in Westerville.  Working with Jules Rathj, we are implementing issues of social justice, identity, and empathy through community based arts integrated projects.  It is a welcoming challenge to be able to actually teach again in a classroom of middle school students who also serve as motivators for my continued learning!
It was wonderful to be able to attend the 2021 OAEA Conference even if it was for only one evening! I enjoyed connecting again with treasured colleagues and friends and watching the leadership evolve and add energy and insight to the organization. I am proud to be a member of the organization and to meet with such dedicated art teachers.
